Joining Maine ASCD

As one of the benefits of receiving the Maine Teacher of the Year title, I was invited to join the Maine ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) Board of Directors. This association runs true to my heart as two of its initiatives are teaching the whole child and teaching the 21st century learners. Today in Augusta, there was a conference on Response to Intervention (RtI) with the keynote speaker being Judy True. I was fortunate to be the lunch time speaker and shared my philosophy and passion for teaching to the whole child.

  • WVOM

Another wonderful opportunity was presented today to discuss on air the Maine Teacher of the Year process. On The Bangor radio station WVOM’s morning radio show the Commissioner Susan Gendron and I had the opportunity to share our common goal, which is to reach out and invite other districts across the state of Maine to honor their teachers through the T.O.Y. process. Unfortunately, there were no teachers honored from the northern parts of our state this year. As the 2009 recipient of the Maine Teacher of the Year award, I am hoping to showcase the chronicles of events that take place throughout my experiences with the teacher of the year process. I believe that a lot of districts may be more willing to participate if they know what is expected of them and their teacher of the year nominee. The T.O.Y. process is about finding and celebrating teachers who make a difference in their students’ lives, as well as to honor the profession of teaching and the dedication that embodies this profession.

After lunch today, I had the privilege of meeting with Marc Glass who is the managing editor for the UMF (University of Maine Farmington) Alumni Magazine. He took several photos and asked a few questions for an upcoming Alumni Magazine. Wow! I never thought that when I graduated from UMF in 1993, that I’d be featured in one of their magazines. If you know anyone who is considering going to college for education or you yourself are interested in teaching, although biased, I have to say that I was well educated at this magnificent university. Go Beavers!!!! Here’s a link to my alma mater.

  • WGAN Morning News

Today, I did a call-in radio interview for the WGAN Morning News hosted by Ken Altshuler and Mike Violette. It was truly a riot!!! These two guys were hysterical and my cheeks hurt from the constant smile on my face throughout the interview. By the way, Ken and Mike I loved your description of what you thought I looked like…Donna Reed. I do have blond hair; however, it is long (not a bob) and I don’t wear glasses, yet. Mike if you ever feel the need to shoot a spitball…I promise I won’t give you a detention. If you haven’t tuned into these guys yet, don’t hesitate they are great company for the ride into work or just to get your brain invigorated and thinking.

  • My Radio Debut

Ray Richardson from My Maine Fox Morning Show invited Commissioner Susan Gendron, Superintendent Stan Sawyer, and me to be guests on his morning talk show. Here is the link for anyone interested in seeing this interview. Mr. Richardson was very gracious and heartfelt during the interview. It was my first experience with a live radio broadcast and I was truly amazed to watch Ray Richardson in action. He was juggling ten things at one time while also reporting in and out of a live radio broadcast. I was in awe and he made it look effortless. What an amazing experience this was for me, I am looking forward to future visits with my Fox friends.

Ray has generously asked me to come in from time to time to share my Teacher of the Year experiences with the public. Mr. Richardson is a dedicated parent and community member who values education and teachers. I am thrilled to be able to chronicle my journey with the Fox morning team, as I’ve got to say I really had a blast wearing the head phones and talking about the things I hold most dear to my heart…my family, my friends, and of course teaching. Watch out Ray, I’ve got the radio show bug.

Commissioner of Education, Susan Gendron, presented our school banner!

Today was an extraordinary day!!! I was blessed with the honor of being named the 2009 Maine Teacher of the Year, at a surprise assembly. Commissioner Susan Gendron, Martin McKeon the 2008 Maine Teacher of the Year and several Teacher of the Year members, Tap Fitzgerald from Hannaford, along with Westbrook Administration, School Committee members, City Council members, P.T.O officers, as well as the entire Congin staff, current and past students and parents, and my amazing family and friends were there to share in this incredible celebration.
A lovely reception followed the assembly, in the library. Also, my husband Steve secretly planned a great party at our house. I can not express how fortunate I feel to have the love and support of my family, my community, and my school behind me. Thank you ever so much for this magnificent opportunity that I’ve been afforded.
