Behavior Letters

April 14th, 2009 by brunellek

Dear Parents,

Your child should be sparking a conversation about behavior with you this evening.  The last week and a half have been very trying.  Social conversations are taking precedence over silent working time.  Students are being rude and disrespectful.  It is not a very good learning environment; and those that have continued to work as serious students are very frustrated.

Usually my class is one who is complimented on behavior.  They walk through the halls quietly.  During silent reading they are engaged in their books.  They are able to do projects and earn rewards that other classrooms may not.  They are always working hard to earn Preferred Activity Time (PAT) for Friday afternoon.   Miss Bradbury and I have been letting them earn a 2-class game in the gym if both classes are amazing.  Unfortunately, this week we will not be joining Miss Bradbury’s class.

That was definitely decided when I picked them up from library this afternoon and the substitute teacher told me it was horrible and the worst class she’s ever subbed for.  I was so disappointed and embarassed of that review.

Then, I had a meeting during their silent reading time.  When I came back, the teacher watching the classroom said that it was the worst this class has ever been.  They have a scale, a rubric, to determine what their behavior should look like and a 3 is the best.  They usually get 3s.  Today they got a -1.

That was when I asked the whole class to write 3 letters.  1 apologizing the teacher here during silent reading.  1 to me, apologizing for behavior over the past 2 weeks; and 1 to you, their parents.  The letter home is supposed to spark conversation between you and your child so that you can talk to them about their own behavior and/or what some strategies are when dealing with peers who are not making a great choice.  I’m asking for parents to sign the letter so that I can see this was discussed.

Thank you for taking the time to reinforce this; and I’m sure this group can go back to their amazing, super-student ways!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Brunelle

Thank you to everyone who has donated SO MUCH these past two weeks!  I’ve had money donated for pizza and drinks, plus LOTS and LOTS of snacks.  The generosity has been amazing.  I know that it makes the kids feel special.

Note:  We should be done with the MEAs tomorrow.  So, Thursday we will be back to our old schedule, including homework!!

There is no homework today.

Students in All-City Band need to remember their instruments tomorrow.  They will be walking next door, to the Jr. High, after school with Mr. Rich.

MEAs will begin tomorrow, because of the snow day.  Thank you SO much for everyone who has volunteered to bring in snacks, or already has brought in snacks.  We have such generous families!

My class knows that their homework this week is to make sure they get plenty of sleep, eat well, and rest their brains.  I’m sure they will do a great job on our state tests!

Lastly, Friday is our “Bean Party.”  It is a pizza/pajama party.  Thank you again to parents who have donated money toward our party!  I really appreciate all of the help.  Students may wear pajamas all day, but make sure they have boots/sneakers for outside and gym activities later in the day.
