Canal Technology

Good morning everyone!

We’re all at the Westbrook Middle School helping Karen out with her technology day. Of course anyone who really knows me is chuckling to themselves as I know nothing about Mac’s. I know I know a computer is a computer, but it’s just nice to know where to go to find things and what the shortcuts are. It’s like using Writer instead of Word, you can do the same things, but the commands may be in different places or a little differently worded.

Stacy and I are helping the teachers to “Have a Web Presence.” My part of today is blogging. So what happens yesterday? As Olga and I are working on embedding a video, the system has a hiccup and my blog page is gone! I find it funny, just another day in the life of me. So I started to recreate the blog. It won’t be as fancy, but it will be there.

Wow what happened to April and May? This year is flying by. The news crew now has fourth grade interns. We are exposing some interested fourth graders to what goes on at the news show. Hopefully this will help get two teams of students for next year. They will then be able to swap off and not spend every recess inside. There are a couple of really committed students this year. One has been in every day we’ve worked and the other most days. Great job guys!

March Madness is in full swing. Teachers are using technology all over the school. We have CD players, computers, laptops, projectors and Smart Boards all in use. It’s exciting to walk through the halls and see how staff members are integrating. Keep up the good work everyone!

The news crew has been busy! Over the December break, we premiered on the Time Warner local access channel.  Now the crew is excited and working on the next show for school and cable. We have taped Mrs. Pecoraro’s 4th grade classroom using an interactive white board and are madly editing it to a reasonable length. What to cut and what to save proves to be more difficult than it sounds. They are doing a great job working through this task.

Mrs. Brown and I have started a new blog called Everyone Reads. Each month she will select a new author or book for us to read together. The us is everyone- students, staff, parents and community members. Spread the word. Click on the link in my Blogroll to connect to the page. Then read the book, if it’s an author read more than one book. Read the comments and leave one yourself. The point is to enjoy a book with others.

The Canal students have created the first newscast for the WCCN. It is really exciting! We still have a lot to learn, but the first one is great.
